What Happens at Your First Appointment?

Your first appointment is designed to help us understand your body, not begin a full course of care.

If appropriate, the doctor may perform a gentle Neuro-Structural adjustment as part of the examination to better understand how your body responds. This is done for diagnostic purposes and to gather additional information that helps guide your care.

Before any recommendations are made, your doctor will carefully review your examination findings, X-rays (if taken), and all of the information collected during your evaluation.

Only after you fully understand what’s causing your problem, your treatment options, the expected outcomes, and your personalized Recovery Roadmap will you decide whether you’d like to move forward with care.

Our goal is simple:

A low-risk, high-value first visit that gives you the clarity and confidence to make an informed decision about your health—without pressure or obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions From New Patients

Do I Need Prior Authorization From My Insurance?

You do not need prior authorization from your insurance company in order to see us.If you are, however, concerned about coverage or have any questions regarding chiropractic coverage, please call your insurance company prior to your first visit to inquire. Upon your first visit, we will take a copy of your insurance card in order to verify your coverage, so please bring your card with you.

What Can I Expect During My First Visit?

Your Initial Appointment is a 45 minute appointment. We take our time to get to know you from the inside-out during our first visit; a process vital for us to be able to understand you and provide exceptional care.

During your first visit, you will be asked a series of questions during your intake regarding your health history. Following the intake, you will have digital scans taken and a digital postural evaluation in order to further understand your current state of health and wellness. Then, you will receive X-rays so we can see exactly what the problem is that we will be working with going forward.

Can I Be Seen While I am Pregnant?

You can still see us as a new patient if you are pregnant. The only thing that changes is that we wait to take x-rays until after you give birth.  Lastly, congratulations! You are taking a very important step in your and your baby’s health journey. Chiropractic care helps align both your spine and pelvis which can be incredibly beneficial during the birthing process. We would love to do a quick exam on your newborn, too! We can check to ensure the baby’s equilibrium was not disrupted during the birthing process and use small, gentle adjustments to make sure the baby has no interference that effect the baby’s ability to nurse, properly digest food and maintain balance in the body.

What is a Subluxation?

Chiropractic is the only healing profession in the world that recognizes that your body has the ability to function at its optimum level, as long as there is no interference to the master control system (the nervous system). A chiropractor’s job is to locate, analyze and remove any interference to the nervous system. These blockages or misalignments are called vertebral subluxations.

When a spinal nerve is being restricted because of a vertebral subluxation, the muscle, organ or gland that is attached to the spinal nerve cannot receive all of the information that the brain is trying to send to it. A study by Dr. Seth Sharpless at the University of Colorado has shown that brain impulses can be decreased up to 60% by placing the weight of a dime on a nerve. Our bodies cannot react and function properly at only 40% of its optimal capacity.

When a circuit overloads in your house and it “blows,” you go down to the circuit breaker box and check all of the circuits. You examine all of them to make sure they are all in perfect alignment, and when you come to the one that is out of alignment, you simply adjust the circuit and turn the power back on. The body works in the same way. A chiropractor checks your spine to make sure that all of the vertebrae are in perfect alignment.

When a vertebra is out of alignment, called a subluxation, it can be adjusted by the doctor’s hands so that the “power” can be turned back on to the muscle, organ or gland that the nerve controls. When the power is “on,” that muscle, organ or gland regains its ability to function at its optimum level and your body will start the healing process.

What Can My Child Expect During Their New Patient Appointment?

When you come in to Atlantis with your child, you will be welcomed and greeted by our friendly staff who will answer any questions you may have while you wait for the doctor. The Child New Patient Intake form is much lengthier than the Adult Intake Form because we want to know every important detail of your child’s medical history in order to fully understand their entire health picture. We do not do x-rays on children under 18, but instead conduct a comprehensive physical exam. The doctor will use gentle touches on your child’s spine to look for subluxations and vertebra that are out of alignment. The doctor then uses gentle, careful adjustments to put these vertebra back into place. You will be able to work with the doctor to address any and all concerns you have regarding your child’s health and overall wellbeing.

Why Should My Child See a Chiropractor?

Chiropractic care is vital to a child’s development in order to assist the growth and development process by eliminating the subluxations your child may have. Children receive bodily trauma just as adults do, yet the repercussions usually do not present themselves until later in life.

If your child had a traumatic birth process, fell off the changing table or took a hit to the head at any point during early development, they aging process of the spine begins sooner, creating long-term problems like chronic pain, arthritis and spinal degeneration later in life. Chiropractic can aid the development process by addressing these injuries right away, rather than later in life when they have already progressed.

Additionally, pediatric chiropractic does wonders for children that suffer from ear infections, reflux, asthma, learning disabilities, allergies, trouble sleeping  and trouble nursing. Chiropractic improves overall neurological function in order to address the above ailments and soothes discomfort or tension that may interfere with proper sleep.
